Willow-lined avenue leading to the spring
Just how closely water and willows belong together is demonstrated in our small natural monument in the district of Nuskova in the municipality of Rogašovci.
The small avenue lined with pollarded willow trees leads to the walled-in source of a natural acidulous spring, which gushes out the whole year round. The spring is strongly redolent of sulphur and you can taste the minerals in the water straight away, especially iron. This iron content also colours the outflow and the further course of the small stream rust-red. In the old days, neighbouring people bottled their mineral water here and used it at home to make wine spritzers. Rumour has it that it makes some wines easier to digest, such as the Jurka, a hybrid grape pressed with daredevil insouciance, or the Uhudler and Heckenklescher in the neighbouring Austrian states of Burgenland and Styria, respectively.
While the spring flows constantly, the willow avenue reflects the changing seasons, but whatever the time of year, it always presents a delightful picture. Every few years the trees are radically cut back, fostering their thriving growth. Many trunks are hollow, providing shelter for living creatures from the natural environment and a quaint background for human visitors to photograph and depict.
