To chair or not to chair? That isn’t the question.

People always want to know why all designers make chairs. It’s a fact that sitting on chairs is only common in our Western civilisation. In many cultures crouching or sitting on the floor was, and still is, the simplest and most comfortable way to take up one position for any length of time. Obviously enthronement and its design are very important in our everyday life. Hence chairs of all kinds.
And so Mathis Esterhazy rolled up his sleeves and worked out 14 designs, ending up with his stacking metal chair. Very plain and simple, reduced to its linear design, the chair is nevertheless quite sophisticated: up to ten of them are stackable on top of each other. This not only means it is practical and saves space, but the design gives it the air of a sculpture when placed in the surrounding space, accentuated by the play of light and shade.
